About

Democracy enables individuals and communities to influence governmental priorities and environmental governance. Today, fostering democratic principles is essential for achieving environmental and social sustainability. Environmental education can cultivate values, skills, and competencies that enable students and other community members to participate in equitable and democratic environmental governance.

Cornell University and NAAEE are organizing two online panel and discussion sessions to:

  • Explore various forms of democratic participation in environmental governance that can be supported by environmental education, and

  • Share practical tools that educators can use in their programs to promote civil society, participation, and democracy, which ultimately advance sustainability.

What you will learn

  1. Participation. Understand how participation in environmental governance supports long-term environmental and sustainability goals.

  2. Role of education. Discover how environmental education can enhance deliberative discussions, civic engagement, and participatory decision-making.

  3. Methods. Learn practical methods that environmental educators can use to involve students and communities in environmental decisions and governance.
