Civic Ecology Recreation

Project Leaders: Marianne Krasny, Daniel Decker, Bernd Blossey, Jody Enck, Richard Stedman, and Keith Tidball

How might recreational activities contribute to environmental quality and community vitality? This research initiative focuses on the outcomes of three programs that integrate recreation with environmental stewardship: an undergraduate student club that combines hiking, clean-ups, and habitat restoration in campus natural areas; a hunting program designed to reduce deer abundance in natural areas where deer negatively impact native biodiversity; and Trout Unlimited chapters that integrate stream restoration, education, and fly fishing. Partners include Cornell's Friends of the Gorge, NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, and the Cornell Deer Management Study.
